My Fav Year 2013

I have mentioned that I lived in England for a few years.  This Christmas, in a fit of nostalgia, I sat down and watched the Queen's annual Christmas message, in which she meditated on the past year and set the tone for the new year.  New Year's is always a time for reflection and resolution.  If the Queen can do it, so can the Mermaid.

I try to keep my "real" life and this blog separated, but since it's the end of the year, I hope you'll indulge my Mermaid musings.

At the beginning of this year, I sat down to devise a resolution for 2013 -- something I could stick to.  At that point, I had had major surgery in 2011 and 2012, I was feeling out of shape, and I felt like my knee would never stop aching.  Honestly, I just wanted to get through the year without having knee surgery.  Rather than resolving to exercise or diet, I came up with the "Moment of Fav" (which I've shared with my Facebook friends throughout this year).  Without losing my trademark cynicism, I resolved to find and savor a moment of "Favvulosity" every day in 2013.  No, I haven't forgotten how to spell -- Fav is like "Fab," only better.  Every day, no matter how tired or grumpy or cranky I might be, I found one thing that made me smile (basically, I took time to reflect on how great my life really is).  For the first time, I stuck to my resolution.

I looked back through all my Moments of Fav from 2013 and there are definitely some themes:

- Starting this blog and watching it grow (over 3300 views as of year end)
- Savoring time with family and friends
- Making time to take care of myself
- Cooking for my friends and family
- Celebrating my friends' accomplishments (and my own)
- Enjoying a play, movie, book or TV show
- Food p*rn
- The relief of the completion of repairs to my parents' Sandy-damaged house
- Enjoying my cats 

- Reconnecting with old friends (and surviving my milestone college reunion)
- Celebrating those who triumph over adversity 
- The random things you see on the NY subway

- Enjoying a good cuppa 
- Travelling
- Making jam
- Taking the time to enjoy a beautiful sunny day (or a snowstorm)

The big moment of Fav as the year ends is that my friend Miss C is on the mend after taking a nasty spill over her bike handlebars last Friday -- very grateful that she was wearing a bike helmet (and very thankful for the daily updates from her hubby GKH).

I think there is something to this positivity -- by being more positive, I actually started taking better care of myself, eating better, exercising, etc.  Without sounding like a Weight Watchers ad, I can see the physical results so far:

Same favvulous me, fewer chins, and my knees and back are less achy.  I'm happier and more "present", and I'm enjoying the journey.

For 2014, I am still working on my resolutions -- I am going to discontinue the daily Moment of Fav, but I will note occasional Moments of Fav when the mood strikes me.  I will make sure life continues to be favvulous (and I have a few new water adventures in the works for 2014).

Mermaid at the Movies -- Channeling my Inner Esther Williams

It's Christmas week -- Merry Christmas to those who celebrate!  Good New York Jew that I am, I spent yesterday indulging an old holiday tradition -- a movie and Chinese food with my folks.  I have been lucky enough to spend recent Christmases with friends, enjoying delicious feasts (in NYC, the UK and even California).  This year, I wanted to have a low key holiday and I really wanted to go to the movies.  Luckily, my parents were game.  We went to see American Hustle (very good, but didn't live up to the hype, in my opinion -- but I loved all the seventies hair styles and period details) and had nice big bowls of noodle soup and some dumplings at a very frenetic Chinese restaurant on the East Side.  Chatting up the staff in Mandarin helped us get a better table, at least.  It was a good day, but the reality of a teeming Manhattan movie theater did not live up to my childhood nostalgia.  I think I'll go back to Christmas dinner with friends next year (and watch some videos on Boxing Day).

I am working this week, but I still have a chance to catch up on some movies at home, so I started thinking about water-themed movies (while trying to avoid obvious choices like Splash and The Little Mermaid).  There are not that many movies depicting water exercise.  A friend mentioned Lost in Translation (one of my favorite movies).  I forgot about this scene of Bill Murray swimming in the Park Hyatt Tokyo.  The underwater view of the class is pretty great.  Bill Murray gets in on the action in this deleted scene.

I also thought about this scene from Cocoon, in which Hume Cronyn, Wilford Brimley and Don Ameche are rejuvenated with the help of alien pods in the swimming pool.

Those guys are pretty great divers (or else the editing of the stunt men is very good).

But then I decided to go back to the source and discovered this great set of Esther Williams DVDs on Amazon (you can also stream some of these online via Netflix, Amazon Video, etc.).  Nothing beats a classic.  Esther Williams passed away earlier this year at the age of 91.  She was a championship swimmer and became the queen of the Hollywood water musical extravaganza (there are a bunch of great clips from her films here).

Yes, some of these films are very dated.  Looking back, however, I love that all the women are very athletic without looking starved (they look healthy and athletic but still a little curvy).  The bathing suits are very retro-glam, and it makes me want to put on a flowery swim cap and sign up for synchronized swimming lessons.  Williams married Fernando Lamas (her co-star in several films, including Dangerous When Wet).  Dangerous When Wet also features a sequence with two animated co-stars (Tom and Jerry).

This sequence from Easy to Love puts the Go Go's to shame.

I leave you with this Oscar-winning song from Neptune's Daughter (partially filmed at Weeki Wachee in Florida), featuring Esther, a surprisingly hot young Ricardo Montalban, Betty Garrett and Red Skelton.  Skelton is pretending to be a South American polo player, hence the strange accent (don't ask).

A holiday classic (it probably wasn't that cold in Southern California, but suspend your disbelief and enjoy!).

The Mermaid S'Wets With the Boys

The winter has gotten off to an early and cold start here in NYC.  I have been busy at work (which is normal for this time of year) and the pool at Equinox was closed around Thanksgiving for cleaning and maintenance.   I have also been baking up a storm and may have actually consumed my weight in butter over the past two weeks (well, not really, but I perfected a couple of holiday cookie recipes).  I feel like I am living in my giant purple down puffer coat (happy and warm, but looking vaguely like Barney the dinosaur as I trundle around in the ice and snow).  Luckily, I tried a great new class about a week ago -- S'Wet, taught by the fabulous Jenni Lynn.

Jenni teaches a Sunday morning water exercise class at Equinox on Lexington and 63rd.  It is kind of a hybrid of aerobics, interval training, stretching and toning, with some yoga and pilates elements in the mix.  I really enjoyed the class, so I talked to Jenni about the blog and she invited me to try her S'Wet class, which meets at various locations, including the JCC, NY Health and Racquet Club,  Equinox and Asphalt Green Battery Park City.  I tried the Saturday afternoon class at Yorkshire Towers (305 East 86th Street, just east of Second Avenue).

I have mentioned that I grew up on the East Side.  One of my grade school friends lived in Yorkshire Towers, and I have vivid memories of swimming in the pool there as a kid.  The decor is a little bit updated, but the pool is still great -- big and nicely heated.  There are locker facilities and a sauna in the adjacent gym.

In the year or so that I have been doing water exercise, the Saturday S'Wet class was a first for me.  I was the only woman in the class!  Lucky Mermaid, working out with these nice blokes -- including Jenni's lovely and supportive boyfriend.  The Wednesday night class at Yorkshire Towers apparently has more of a mix of men and women.

S'Wet is a mix of high intensity interval training and plyometrics.  We started by running back and forth from the shallow end of the pool to the deep end.  I have been doing deep water running for awhile, but this is the first time I tried running in the deep end without a flotation belt.  I didn't sink, but I also had a little trouble propelling myself forward in the deep water (ironically, I have no problem moving in Deep Water Running class when I am supposed to be running in place).  We did a variety of exercises in the shallow and deep water using kickboards and buoyancy bells.  My favorite deep water exercise involved stretching my arms out (with the bells) and swinging my legs back and forth like the pendulum on a clock.  The class was challenging -- I found it a little hard to keep up (but not because I was the only girl!).

We finished the class with some aqua boxing using my favorite new water toy -- Aqquatix Combat Gloves.  Great for working out some stress.

You put your hand through the hole and grab onto the bar at the bottom of the glove.  It's a little hard to visualize, but you can check out Jenni's S'Wet page on Facebook for lots of great photos of the class.  

The class was challenging (so much so that I woke up at 5 a.m. the next morning because every muscle in my body was a bit sore -- good pain).  I will definitely try it again.  Jenni is an energetic and positive teacher (and a champion of water fitness) and the class was lots of fun.   You can contact Jenni through her website for information about class fees (for some of the clubs, the class is open to members; you can pay by the class at Yorkshire Towers and Asphalt Green).

Searching for Zen: The Mermaid Tries Aqua Yoga at Asphalt Green in Honor of Thanksgivvukah!

Aqua Yoga at Asphalt Green started with a phrase I've never heard in my water exercise adventures:

"Stand on top the pool."   

I've occasionally felt that I could walk on water, but this was a pretty neat trick.  Before I explain, I should backtrack a little.

I haven't blogged in a few weeks.  I have been sticking to my exercise routine, but I've been stressed and a bit down -- primarily because of work.  Without going into details, my company has been in the news a lot in recent weeks, and it's wearing on me.  I haven't been able to escape the constant media coverage and I've been a bit demoralized -- I haven't been sleeping well and my jaw has been permanently tense.  Things are finally calming down and I am feeling more like myself, and I have to say that spending time with my friends and sticking to the exercise routine has been a godsend -- it has helped tremendously.

I also strained my back this weekend maneuvering a large turkey into the oven for my annual Thanksgiving prequel pot luck party (ironically enough, not my first turkey-related injury -- maybe it's time to consider vegetarianism), so I thought a little gentle exercise might be just the tonic.

Since the pool at Equinox is closed for the holiday week, I decided to try something a little different.  And so I ended up at Asphalt Green on this frigid Monday night.

When I first hurt my knee, the knee doc recommended that I try Asphalt Green.  I hemmed and hawed but of course he was right.  I grew up on the Upper East Side (and -- in fact -- learned how to drive on York Avenue and East End Avenue near Asphalt Green's current location).   Now that I live on the West Side, Asphalt Green is quite a bit out of my way.  Getting there from work took a solid 45 minutes (as opposed to 15 minutes to get to Equinox or deep water running).  Getting home was not too bad, though -- I got home about 10 minutes later than I normally do on Monday nights.  It is still a bit inconvenient to get there three times/week, but it was totally worth the trip.  Hopefully the facility won't be destroyed by the "Marine Transfer Station" (i.e., garbage dump) that they are planning to build there (for more information, click here).

The aquatics center at Asphalt Green is unlike any other pool I've tried in the city.  There is an enormous olympic size pool, which is divided into three sections.  One section was full of high school swimmers free-styling back and forth (team practice).  There were recreational swimmers at the other end, and a couple of lanes of younger kids swimming across the middle.  They opened Asphalt Green after I was out of college -- I wish it had been open when I was in high school (nearby).  It is head and shoulders above the 92nd Street Y.

I loved the energy of the place.

The yoga class is held in the smaller training pool, which is tucked in an alcove next to the big pool (with nice big windows next to the pool).  It was so cold that the windows had fogged up, but I imagine it would be sunny and bright in better weather.

The depth on the training pool is adjustable.  When I arrived, the bottom of the pool was flush with the pool deck.  We walked out to the center and they lowered the bottom to a depth of about 4 feet, gradually easing us into the water (they adjusted it a couple of times during the class for different exercises).  The training pool was also nice and warm (which was great on such a cold night).  It was kind of like exercising in a giant bathtub -- very soothing (and much roomier than the training pool at the JCC on the Upper West Side).  The pool is totally accessible, and the lifeguards showed me the special chairs they use to help people who cannot walk get into the pool.

The regular teacher was away this week -- we had a substitute named Joni who was excellent.  I haven't done yoga in a long time, but it was very similar to a class on dry land, with a few variations.  We started off with some bandhas (breathing exercises) and then did a few different poses and routines, mostly named after animals -- cat pose (done standing up rather than on all fours), the flamingo, cow pose, the crocodile (standing pushups against the side of the pool), and tree pose.  We did a sequence of warrior poses (lunging and stretching the arms).  We finished with some stretches, including the aqua yoga version of downward facing dog (which we did standing up against the side of the pool).  We didn't do any handstands.  At the end of the class, they raised the bottom of the pool and I emerged like Venus stepping out of Botticelli painting (but sporting a Lands End Tugless Tank).

It's a little hard for me to describe the class, but I really liked it for several reasons:
  • The teacher was excellent.  Joni explained the exercises clearly and would hop out of the pool to demonstrate the movements on land (and then hop back in and exercise with us).  
  • It was easier on my joints than regular yoga.  I have a love-hate relationship with yoga.  My friends and relatives swear by it, a couple teach yoga, and one of them actually teaches naked male yoga in San Francisco.  I love the breathing and the flow, but doing yoga on land really does a number on my knees, wrists and back (particularly downward facing dog).  I had trouble with yoga even when I was younger and skinnier.  Doing the same movements standing up in water was easier (but I still feel like I worked the same muscles and got some of the benefits without all the aches and pains). 
  • Taking time to breathe.  I love my regular classes (Deep Water Running and Aqua Boot Camp) but I think that this week I really needed to take time to stop, relax and breathe.  
Asphalt Green offers Aqua Yoga on Mondays at 6:30 pm, and they are adding an early morning class in the spring.  The classes are open to members and you can also buy a series of classes.  I liked the class enough that I may invest in a class card for an occasional class (maybe every other week).  They also offer Aqua Tai Chi and an extensive arthritis exercise program.  The gentle exercise is a good complement to the more aerobic workouts.  

Asphalt Green is at 90th and York Avenue (reachable on the 86th Street crosstown bus and the M31 bus).

Boys and Boats -- Or, It's the Great Pumpkin

I finally made it back into the pool yesterday for the first time in two weeks (having been sidelined -- in succession -- by an achy knee, a work emergency and finally the ebola/flu/respiratory bug, which has finally abated with the help of many bowls of chicken noodle soup).  After sounding like Darth Vader, Bea Arthur and Lauren Bacall, I now sound like myself again.  Just because I couldn't go in the water does not mean I couldn't find some water-themed diversions (with a little help from my friends).

Breaking Two Records in Giant Carved Out Pumpkins

The first story is courtesy of my neurologist friend the Angel, whose Anglophilia is rivaled only by his passion for Dr. Who.  Just in time for Halloween, the video tells the tale of Dmitri Galitzine, who broke two records this week.  First, he set the world record for the fastest 100M pumpkin paddle.  Later in the week, he crossed the Solent from Gosport to the Isle of Wight (near my old stomping grounds in Bournemouth) in a motorized hollowed out 500 kg pumpkin (sourced from the Mere Brown Giant Pumpkin Show in Lancashire).  Dmitri is quite a cutie, and I'm giving him credit as an honorary merman, since both records were accomplished in water.  The video is hilarious and quintessentially English -- note the correct pronunciation of "watermelon" at the very end of the video.

Warwick Rowers Calendar

My friend Tiddles alerted me to this one (naughty, Tiddles).  Also from the UK (also water related), for the sixth year in a row, the University of Warwick Boat Club has doffed its kit for a calendar in aid of Sport Allies, an outreach program which fights homophobia and bullying in schools.  What's wrong with a little bit of beefcake, if it's for a good cause?  You can order the calendar here.  And I've included a video sneak peek.  It's a little racy (don't watch it at the office) but they featured excerpts of the video on Good Morning America, so I figure it's safe for Metropolitan Mermaid.  Note -- I learned how to embed videos for this post ;-)

A Propos of Nothing -- A Rant About Kale

I have been out of the pool for more than a week due to a bad flu/ebola-like cold (I am convinced that patient zero was the cherubic toddler who sneezed on me two weeks ago on the M79).  Thanks to the miracle of antibiotics, I hope to be back in action by Thursday.  I really miss the exercise (that says alot).  I have consumed so much chicken noodle soup that my local ramen shop will be sad to see me go back to work.

In the meantime, I stumbled across "Can We Please Stop Talking About Kale Now?" -- it amused me to no end, in light of my health/self-improvement efforts over the past year.  Where the Mermaid's health is concerned, "Jewish Penicillin" (in this case, made by a guy named Yoshi) trumps kale any time.  Even if I still sound like Darth Vader.

A Super Mermaid Swims in Herald Square

Work has been insanely busy in the past couple of weeks (for reasons that those who know me will understand) and I've been grumpy and neglecting the blog.  Luckily I haven't been neglecting my workouts (I did miss one class due to a work emergency but that is the first one I've missed for work reasons in 10 months -- I count that as major personal progress).   My knee has been tetchy, so I need to stick with it.  On Friday, I did a closet purge and donated the clothes that are now way too big for me to charity -- so there is no turning back!

While I was stuck at my desk on Wednesday, Diana Nyad (one of my heroes) was swimming back in forth in a special lap pool in Herald Square, finishing up a 48 hour charity fundraiser for Sandy Relief.  As of today (October 12) she has raised nearly $110,000 for Americares.  For more information or to make a donation, click here.

My fabulous deep water running coach Robert Valentin swam up a storm this summer (including swimming around Liberty Island, across the East River, and down the Hudson to Lower Manhattan).  It cheered me up (and brought me out of my work-induced funk) to see that he spent part of Wednesday in the pool with Diana.  He was chosen to swim as part of his volunteer work with Air Force vets.

He told me that after they swam, Diana commented that he has very positive energy.  I agree completely -- he rocks (he is a great coach).  I think some of that positive energy rubbed off on me when I made it to deep water running on Thursday night.  I told him we should have done a deep water running flash mob in the Herald Square pool.

Hoping to try a couple of new classes in the next few weeks, and I am almost done with the long-awaited Vancouver Part 2.

Keeping Tabs on the Mermaid -- Trying out the Shine Activity Tracker

A few months ago, I came across an article in the New Yorker about a treadmill desk.  The article highlighted the health benefits of moving around (and the risks of being sedentary).  While I am not ready to invest in a treadmill desk or a desk cycle, I do spend way too much time sitting during the week, and I wanted to increase my activity.  I used to have a pedometer, but I found it a little clunky and inaccurate.  Technology has improved, and there are now a variety of electronic activity trackers on the market.  I wanted something simply designed that would track my activity accurately, sync to my phone, and give me a little nudge to get up and walk around (or swim around).

I did some research and narrowed my search down to three candidates -- the Fitbit One, the Weight Watchers Active Link, and a newer product called the Shine.  All of them have gotten good reviews from sources that I trust.  I needed a device that I could wear in the pool (all of these work in the water) and that I could clip to my bra or swimsuit (for the boys, you can also clip it to your shirt or waistband).  A lot of my friends have the Fitbit Flex bracelet.  If you are into the whole plastic bracelet look, then that is a good option, but to me it kind of screams house arrest couture.  

The Fitbit syncs wirelessly to your computer, tablet or smartphone by bluetooth.  It tracks a lot of data (and includes a heart monitor, as well as tracking your sleep and activity) and allows you to track your food intake.  It also gives you inspirational/encouraging messages and has a social media component.  It costs around $100 (depending which model you choose).  The One is pretty simple and unobtrusive.  I thought that the inspirational messages would drive me crazy and I was worried the social media component might play to my competitive instincts (which is not a good thing).  I am also a bit of a hypochondriac, so between the heart monitor and the sleep monitor, I would be self-diagnosing myself with sleep apnea, heart issues, etc.  So the Fitbit was not for me.

Since I am pretty much permanently on Weight Watchers (it seems to be working), I thought about the Active Link.  A couple of people in my Aqua Boot Camp class have them.  It is similar to the Fitbit, but the big advantage is that it syncs to the Weight Watchers points system, which makes it a little easier to track activity points.  The device itself is about $59, but there is also a monthly fee of about $6.  I thought this might add up quickly (and would have me permanently wedded to WW).  My friends who have it like it, though.

When I was doing my research this spring, I read about the Shine, which was being developed by a company called Misfit Wearables.  The company was founded on the day that Steve Jobs died, and the name pays homage to Apple's "Think Different" campaign, which began, "Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes."  I am a loyal Apple fan and a little bit of a square peg.  

One of the company's founders is the former CEO of Apple, and the device was "crowdfunded" through Indiegogo (the founders set out to raise $100,000 and raised 8 times that amount).  I spent the early part of my career advising tech startups, so I was intrigued by the story.  For me, however, the Shine won out on a combination of good design and functionality.  

Note -- the Shine is only compatible with iOS, not Android.  

I ordered the device online for about $119, and it arrived in two days.  

The Shine is made of metal and is about the size of a quarter -- it is simple and elegant (looking at it, you would not know it is an activity tracker).  

It is waterproof and is even designed to withstand accidental trips through the washing machine.  In my house, it is more likely to meet its demise in cat toy limbo (somewhere behind the couch).  The cats investigated within ten seconds of my having popped it out of its packaging.  So far, it has evaded becoming a puck in the daily feline hockey matches in my apartment.

The Shine is powered by a watch battery, which pops in easily (they include a tool to open the device).  

I downloaded the Shine App for my iPhone and popped the Shine into its magnetic clip (it also comes with a bracelet) and I was in business.

The device allows you to choose initially from three levels of activity -- I chose the moderately active setting -- the equivalent of 1 hour of walking/day (around 8000 steps).  You can adjust your activity level as you go.  

You can wear it on your chest, your wrist or your shoe (depending on your activity), and the algorithm adjusts based upon how you wear it.  To sync the device, you place it on your iPhone and tap it (and it updates).  

In this respect, it is a little less convenient than the Fitbit, which syncs continuously.  You can also track your progress by tapping it -- here is how it looks when I am a third of the way to my daily goal:

It gives you a rough visual idea of how you are progressing toward your goal.  I am not sure exactly how it works (there is a lot of information on the website).  The founders have experience in wearable medical devices (including glucose meters that sync to iPhones), so I feel like there is some science behind the elegant design. 

So far, so good.  On a "normal" day, I can meet my activity goal by walking to and from the subway, getting up every hour to walk around for a few minutes, walking around a little at lunchtime, and adding a 15 minute walk at the end of the day.  On days when I add an exercise class, I exceed my goal.

It seems to track walking and water aerobics very accurately.  It had a little trouble with deep water running, but it did note that I was very active during my class.  I like that it keeps track of your activity on a weekly basis -- in a given week, I have been exceeding my goal, even with one or two less active days.

Because it's still new, I definitely feel like a beta user, but so far I'm happy.  For me, it is enough information and I can increase my activity gradually and it's giving me positive reinforcement to keep moving (at my own pace).  I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Spinning my Wheels: The Mermaid Bikes Underwater at Aqua Studio

About five seconds into my Aqua Cycling class at Aqua Studio, I developed a sudden awareness of my quadricep muscles.  Five minutes in, I discovered that it's possible to sweat in a pool.

After months of procrastinating, I decided to try Aqua Cycling.  I enjoy cycling (despite the fact that my own bike has been hanging unused in my hall closet for 8 years) and I love the water.  Spinning always intimidated me.  My old boss, who biked to lower Manhattan from his home in northern New Jersey on a regular basis, used to take spinning classes during lunch time.  He was in incredible shape.  I thought about trying it but it seemed a bit intimidating -- the din of the bicycles, the high volume of spandex, the screaming instructors with their headsets.  But in my quest to find new water workouts I was undeterred.  I wanted to bring my friend Bonbon, the neurologist/stroke specialist, with me -- in case I passed out in the pool.  I had a window of opportunity this week.  Bonbon was on call, but I went anyway.

Aqua Studio opened several months ago to a wave of publicity.  It is the brainchild of Esther Gauthier, a French woman.  Apparently, aqua spinning is popular in France.

From the moment I walked into the gorgeous studio on Franklin Street, I sort of wanted to live there.  The ground floor is beautiful and minimalist, with dark wooden floors and a glass enclosed stairway leading down to the locker room and the pool.  I had booked the class online.  The receptionist greeted me warmly.  Aqua Studio requires that you rent clear jelly pool shoes for the class (for a $2 rental fee).  I am blessed with freakishly large feet, so I was worried that they wouldn't have shoes to fit me -- I was pleasantly surprised that they had an ample supply in all sizes (including mine).  Shoes and towel in hand, I descended the glass enclosed stairway.  The locker room is tasteful and spotless.  I stashed my belongings in a locker (they provide keys for the lockers) and made my way to the pool,

where I was greeted by name by the instructor, Ava.

There were only a few students, and I was the only newbie.  The pool area is simply designed, with a concrete deck.  We hopped in the pool, which was comfortably warm.  Ava asked whether I had any injuries and showed me how to adjust the height and position of the seat, and gave me a brief orientation (advising on how to avoid putting undue pressure on my knee).  Strangely enough, I felt a little seasick standing in the pool adjusting the bike (it was a weird sensation to focus on a fixed metal object in the midst of undulating water).  I was fine once I was on the bike.  The sturdy bikes, which are Italian, are made of stainless steel.

Ava dimmed the lights (there were candles by the pool) and cranked up the music.  We started by cycling and moving our arms around in the water.  Then we did variations of several moves.  We would stand up on the bike and pedal in one of two positions -- high jump and low jump -- Ava was in the pool with us so it was a bit hard to see what we were actually supposed to be doing.   There was a bike up on the deck.  It would have been helpful to have her demonstrate some of the moves on land.  That said, I appreciated that she was in the pool sweating along with us.  I found it a little hard to stand and pedal in the water -- the movement was a little choppy at first, and I was worried about my knee.  I kept up for awhile but I ended up spending a lot of the class sitting on the seat and pedaling furiously.  We did some occasional sprints.  For the most part, it was like spinning on land, with one exception.

At several points during the class, Ava instructed us to stand up.  Keeping our feet in the stirrups of the bike pedals, we had to lift and vault ourselves over and behind the bike seat, where we would float.  Once in that position, we were to continue pedaling while moving our arms as if we were doing the breast stroke.  To do this properly, you need to fully engage your abs.  I managed to maneuver back and forth over the seat successfully, but I was terrified of banging my head on the side of the small concrete pool, so I held onto the seat (for dear life) with one arm and moved the other (alternating arms).  Toward the end of the class, I was brave enough to let go and try it with both arms.  I stroked along smoothly until one of my feet flew out of its stirrup -- at that point I reverted to the one arm method.

We pedaled consistently for about 40 minutes and ended the class with a cooldown and stretch to Adele's Skyfall.

The Aqua Cycling workout has been compared by some to getting a massage -- the Aqua Studio website claims that you will sleep better after the workout.  I would not say it is like a massage (the workout basically kicked my -- er -- mermaid tail).  I will say that I felt really great when I got out of the pool.  I slept like a rock that night.

Would I try it again?  Maybe.

If you already like spinning, you will probably love it.  The classes are a bit expensive (a trial class was $34 and an individual class is $40 after that).  It's about the cost of a class at Soul Cycle.  I was probably the oldest person there by a couple of years (and the next class was full of a gaggle of spandex-clad 20 somethings).  For me, I think it will be an occasional splurge.  I definitely worked some muscles that I hadn't used in awhile and I noticed that I was faster in my next deep water running class.  I didn't love it enough to make it part of my regular routine, but I am going to get my bike tuned up and take it for a spin in the park -- the cycling really seemed to help my knee.  And next time I go to Aqua Cycling I'll bring some friends.

A few other points:

- Most of the classes at Aqua Studio are for women only (this is because they only have one locker room).  They have added two Saturday afternoon classes for men.  You can check the schedule on the website.

- Aqua Studio is located at 78 Franklin Street, between Church and Broadway, across the street from (in dangerously close proximity to) Billy's Bakery, which has some of the best cupcakes in Manhattan.  After my grueling workout, through a surprising act of sheer will power, I resisted the temptation to pop into Billy's for a banana cupcake.  Instead, I treated myself to a cab ride home.

Cat on an Underwater Treadmill

I saw this on several news outlets today - Buddha, a 31 pound cat, exercising on an underwater treadmill (see video here).  I don't judge - go Buddha!  The poor thing sounds unhappy but he's lost weight and is apparently more spry.  I am not trying this with my cat.

The Mermaid on Dry Land Part 1: Vancouver Foodie Tour

As I mentioned in my previous post, Vancouver is home to the longest pool in Canada.  I spent most of my vacation on dry land, frolicking with my friend the White Rabbit, her husband the Red Rabbit, and the wee Pink Rabbit.  Since we had all been there before, we didn't feel obliged to hit all the major tourist spots, but we covered a lot of ground (mostly on foot).  We saw enough that I'm breaking it up into a few posts.  For me, it had all the elements of a perfect vacation -- good friends, good food, and handbags (which will be covered in Part 2).

Vancouver Foodie Tours: World's Best Street Eats Tour

Vancouver is home to a number of great restaurants, but the burgeoning gourmet food truck scene in downtown Vancouver is a major source of local pride.  Prior to 2010, city regulations only permitted food carts in Vancouver to sell hot dogs, roasted chestnuts and sodas.  Seizing on the food cart trend, a savvy politician pushed through changes in local law that year (allowing licensing of a wider variety of mobile food options) and there are now more than 100 food trucks in downtown Vancouver.  Licenses are doled out through a competitive process (in which food bloggers play a role).  As foodies, the Rabbits and I decided to try Vancouver Foodie Tours "World's Best Street Eats Tour" (CAN $49 for a 2-hour tour, including food tastings -- tour schedules and other information are available on their website).  We met our well-informed tour guide, Andrew, in front of the Japadog cart on Smith and Burrard.



Japadog was created by a Japanese ex-advertising executive who came to Vancouver with dreams of starting a food business.  They offer a variety of hot dogs (including seafood and vegetarian options) from several carts and one storefront in Vancouver.  They also have a shop on St. Mark's Place in New York City, which is sort of a dangerous discovery for me.  I didn't know that hot dogs are the White Rabbit's guilty food pleasure.  We split a Kurobata Mayo dog topped with teriyaki, Japanese mayo (insanely tasty -- and I don't normally like mayo), onions and shredded nori (seaweed).  Looks a little scary but it was delicious (good blend of Asian flavors and textures and delicious high-quality sausage).

Food vendors have to go through a rigorous selection process to secure locations in Vancouver, and they are subject to random inspections -- so the trucks were all very clean.

After walking through Robson Square,

we stopped at Mom's Grilled Cheese (where we didn't actually get to try grilled cheese -- we had some homemade mint and ginger lemonade, which was lightly carbonated and not too sweet -- I found it really refreshing).  The proprietress, Cindy Hamilton, used to run craft services trucks for film shoots (including for the film Kill Bill, in China, for which she was a stand-in for Uma Thurman).  The sandwiches looked and smelled amazing, with nicely toasted bread oozing with cheese.

The Pig on the Street cart, next to the grilled cheese truck, looked tasty (but we did not try it).  We trundled over to the nearby Eat Chicken Wraps truck and had one of my favorite tastings of the tour -- a hoisin chicken roll (five spiced organic chicken, hoisin and veggies wrapped in a crispy Chinese pancake).

The combination of flavors was spot on, and I liked the contrast of the crispy pancake and the fresh spring onions.  The chicken wraps are prepared by a husband and wife team (Danny Mei and Sammy Ma) using fresh organic ingredients.  Yum.

Next, we hit the Soho Road Naan Kebab truck, next to the Vancouver City Sky Train station, where we sampled some delicious butter chicken and freshly baked naan (they actually bake naan in the truck, and the kindly chef gave the Pink Rabbit some extra naan to nosh on).

The chicken was moist and tender, and the naan was fresh and delicious.  Soho Road gets bonus points for friendliness (and the food was great).

Finally, we made our way down to Le Tigre, where we tried some really delicious Asian inspired roasted brussels sprouts and cauliflower (delicious) and I had beet fries (so-so -- I was allergic to the other option, which was shellfish based).  The chef at Le Tigre can be identified by his signature Hello Kitty glasses.

We finished up with Chocolate Diablo cookies from the Tacofino truck (chocolate with a hint of chili -- really good -- crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside).

The tour was worthwhile.  Andrew is a trained chef, and gave us a lot of history about Vancouver's food trucks.  He is an accountant by day, so he also provided a lot of information on the economics of the food truck business (I suspect a lot of people fantasize about opening food trucks -- it is definitely a tough business).  Vancouver Foodie Tours also gets bonus points from me for making accommodations for food allergies and dietary restrictions (a couple of us had shellfish allergies and there were two vegetarians in the mix -- the tour organizer could not have been more gracious).  We also met some nice fellow foodies on the tour.

The Longest Pool in Canada (Vancouver Adventures with the White Rabbit)

I am a lifelong New Yorker, but every once in awhile I visit a city that makes me wonder why I continue to deal with the chaos that is NYC.  Vancouver is such a city (but -- no need to worry New York friends -- just when I think I'm ready to leave, NYC reels me back in).  Vancouver is urbane, clean, beautiful, healthy and friendly (with really superb Asian food and excellent public transport).

I recently spent a week in Vancouver meeting up with my Chinese-Canadian doppleganger, the White Rabbit (along with her husband, the Red Rabbit, and their adorable toddler daughter, the Pink Rabbit).  The White Rabbit and I worked together in London years ago and we've stayed in touch ever since thanks to email and Skype.  She lives in Hong Kong at the moment, so Vancouver seemed like a good meeting spot, until I can get over to Hong Kong for a visit.  We had some great adventures in Vancouver, mostly food related -- I am writing them up in a separate post.  

This was my second trip to Vancouver.  I was there briefly in May 1999 for the Vancouver International Half Marathon, which I finished in a freezing, driving, and bone-chilling rain (and then got right onto a red-eye to New York, stopping over en route at LAX for a coffee with my old friend NeNe).  I saw very little of Vancouver on that trip, other than the race route.  My memories of the 1999 trip were clouded by jet lag -- I got off that red-eye and went straight to jury duty -- I ended up falling asleep on a hard wooden bench in the jury room at 60 Centre Street for the better part of the first afternoon.

This time, the weather was more cooperative -- it was gorgeous, sunny and warm the whole week I was there.  I was determined to stick to my water exercise routine and also did a lot of walking, which balanced out some slightly unhealthy eating during my vacation.  I had no trouble finding affordable and convenient water exercise classes in Vancouver.  As luck would have it, we were staying within walking distance of the Kitsilano Pool.

At 137 meters long the Kits Pool is purportedly the longest pool in Canada and the only outdoor salt water pool in Vancouver.  During the summer months, they offer Aqua Fit classes several times a week (including 6 pm classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and morning classes on Saturdays and several other weekdays).  A day pass to the pool, including the class, was $5.67 (Canadian).  There are other options and passes for residents and longer-term visitors.  The pool was lovely and immaculate and the views were stunning.  

I enjoyed the fresh air and the spectacular mountain vista.  By contrast, in New York, I typically work out in windowless basement pools.  

The local folks were very friendly, unpretentious and helpful.  I queued up for the first class behind a gentleman with a long ponytail and a walking stick, sporting a full length kimono and a messenger bag from an origami conference (yes, I was definitely on the West Coast).  He was really nice and explained some of the ins and outs of the pool (i.e., how to avoid crashing into the lap swimmers).  

I went to two evening classes while I was there (I dragged the White Rabbit along to the first one).  The teacher, Ashley, was a bit like the energizer bunny -- we spent about 45 minutes jumping around to a good mix of pop music, and then stretched and did arm exercises for about 15 minutes.  It was an active class (men and women, young and old) -- the White Rabbit and I had to move to avoid a young guy who was splashing/flailing around enthusiastically.  The pool holds up to 1800 people and there were about 100 people in the Wednesday night class (the Friday class was a little smaller -- it was a bit chilly by that point).  It was incredibly orderly.  There were no ropes separating the lap swimmers from the exercise class, but everyone got along without any mishaps.  The locker facilities were clean and a little old school (stainless steel lockers with keys that attach to your swimsuit with giant orange safety pins).  

After the Friday class, I enjoyed the sunset, a glass of local white wine and some delicious salmon (and shared a decadent piece of strawberry ice cream pie) with the Rabbits at the Boathouse at Kitsilano Beach.  The setting was lovely and it was also very child friendly (they had high chairs and a kids' menu).

Unfortunately, the Kitsilano Pool is only open during the summer months, but there are other options.  The Vancouver Aquatics Centre, centrally located next to the Burrard Street Bridge, is open year round (it was closed for renovation during my week in Vancouver).  From the outside, it looks a bit like a bunker.  It has a 50 meter pool and offers a variety of classes (again, very reasonably priced).  The Aquatics Centre at the University of British Columbia also offers a variety of aqua fitness classes, which are open to the public -- a drop in pass is $6.30 (Canadian) and there are other options for multiple visits, season passes, etc.  There are also several other public pools (indoor and outdoor) listed on the City of Vancouver Parks, Recreation and Culture website.  They offer a range of classes (including deep water exercise classes at several sites).

I was really impressed at how easy it was to find a variety of inexpensive, accessible and fun aqua fitness classes (NYC has a bunch of public pools, but offers fewer water exercise classes in its public pools).  We could learn a bit from our friends to the north.  After two wonderful weeks of vacation, I am headed back to work tomorrow.

The Importance of Waterproof Mascara

A few months ago, when I first started Deep Water Running, I arrived home after class to a really concerned look from my doorman.  I'd had a great class splashing around (and getting splashed)  and I felt fabulous.  After a long bus ride home, and the concerned greeting in the lobby, I got upstairs and looked in the mirror to discover my mascara running down my face - I looked like I'd had a literal meltdown.  Lesson #1 - check a mirror before leaving the locker room.  Lesson #2 - waterproof mascara is a mermaid's best friend.

So I was really amused but not surprised to discover that the Aqualillies have their own waterproof makeup line.

I haven't tried it but I will.

Underwater Hockey and Rugby!

My friend Bonbon (a well-regarded neurologist, pseudonym still in progress) lives in a house full of boys.  Her older son is an excellent hockey player, so Bonbon sent me a link to this fabulous piece on underwater hockey from CNN.  The video is kind of amazing.  Apparently, it's very popular in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, and it's starting to catch on in the US.  I may need a little more time in the gym before I try this, but it looks really fun. 

So it got me thinking, what about water rugby?  Someone beat me to it.  Bless YouTube.  I found this really entertaining video of a "water rugby" match, although it actually looks a little more like water basketball or soccer.  I'll let the experts weigh in. 

Why stop there?  How about water tennis?  Leave it to the Brits to come up with scuba tennis.

The possibilities are endless.

Party in the Pool -- The Zumba Apocalypse (or, Adventures with Trixie)

No, it wasn't really apocalyptic, but now that I have your attention....

I have been curious about Zumba for years.  Zumba was created by Alberto Perez in the 1990s, and combines aerobics, martial arts, and a hodgepodge of dance styles (latin, hip-hop, belly dancing, afro-carribean, etc.).  It bills itself as high energy, aerobic and calorie burning -- all good.  It is also a huge and profitable franchise (teachers have to be certified by the Zumba Academy). 

In my quest for all things water, my search uncovered Aqua Zumba, an "invigorating low-impact pool party."  It's summer, I'm in the mood to try something new, so why not?

Unfortunately, my gym doesn't offer Aqua Zumba, but I found an evening class at New York Health & Racquet Club.  Luckily, my friend Trixie Bobotnick (pseudonym of her own creation) is a member, and gladly agreed to invite me to the class.  In addition to being a great friend and a great sport, Trixie is an accomplished triathlete, so I wanted to get her perspective on the workout (since I still consider myself a recovering couch potato).  

We arrived at the appointed time and were greeted by our instructor Taryn, who was very upbeat and welcoming and sported a t-shirt emblazoned with the Zumba logo.  She gave us water gloves and directed us to put on flotation belts (the club had an abundant and well organized stash of flotation belts, buoyancy bells, noodles and other pool accoutrements).  We jumped into the pool.

The music started (Gloria Estefan) and we were off.  First we sprinted back and forth across the pool, propelling ourselves off the sides of the pool with our legs at the beginning of each lap.  We did another variation of this routine.    

I should mention that I have been on an antibiotic this week and hallucinations are a possible side effect.  At this point in the class, Taryn shouted "run, walk or calypso across the pool."  I thought I was hearing things, but then the lady next to me -- who had been struggling with the running routine -- broke into an impeccable samba and sashayed across the pool.  I don't know if it was the class or the antibiotics, but everyone was having fun.  The music changed to Ricky Martin and we did another variation of running across the pool and jumping up and down at the end of each lap.  At this point, several people were dancing, and I think I even started singing along to Living La Vida Loca.  

We did one more warmup, bicycling across the pool on flotation noodles, and then we moved on to the dance component of the class.

I consider myself fairly coordinated and I can generally follow a dance routine, but dancing in water is trickier than expected.  The resistance of the water throws your timing off -- it takes a little time to get used to the movements and coordinate with the music.  We started with sort of a hybrid latin/belly dance routine.  I felt a little ridiculous but was inspired by the energetic lady in the front row who was sporting an animal print swim cap.  She was totally swept up in the moment.  

We moved from that into some sort of African dance number.  I tried to get into the spirit and imagined myself performing in the Lion King.  Unfortunately (maybe due to the antibiotics) the Lion King quickly devolved into the very irreverent (and hilarious) Book of Mormon.  I got a really bad case of the giggles as the song Hasa Diga Eebowai got stuck in my head (Google it).  I regained my composure and we did a couple of other dance routines (incorporating belly dance, martial arts and hip hop elements), and we finished the 45 minute class with a combat crawl back and forth across the pool.

Overall, the class was fun, energetic and not overly taxing.  I feel like I got a gentle full body workout, and my knee actually felt great the next day.  I would do it again (but I still prefer Aqua Boot Camp and Deep Water Running).  Trixie found it less challenging, but thought she might do it again (as a cool down after her training sessions for the marathon).  Trixie still prefers her hill workouts to the party in the pool.  Go Trixie!  I owe her a cocktail as a thank you for treating me to the class.

A few notes:

  • Taryn was a good teacher.  She knew the routines and her movements were very precise (mine were less so...).
  • NY Health & Racquet is a nice facility.  The pool and locker area at the 56th Street branch were very clean.  There is a hot-tub and a co-ed sauna (with kind of scary red lighting) next to the pool.  I was a little put off by a slightly creepy guy leering at the Aqua Zumba class from the hot tub, but Trixie assured me that was not the norm.  
  • Flotation belts:  NY Health and Racquet supplies flotation belts like these (in various sizes):

The belts are similar to the one recommended by the knee doc.  For those of us with curves (and even Trixie, who is in better shape than the Mermaid), the belts are like Victorian corsets -- incredibly uncomfortable -- let's just say the belt zigged where I zag.  I have had better luck with the belts provided in my Deep Water Running class :
They are more adjustable (you can distribute the flotation devices around on the belt) and they keep me afloat in 9 feet of water.  I'm not an expert -- I don't know if there is any real difference between the two types of belts.  Use what works best for you.

The Zumba website has a class finder that allows you to search for Zumba classes worldwide.  Once you have located a class, I would call the facility to make sure they still offer the class (one of the listed clubs in NYC no longer offers the class).  In Manhattan, there are classes at New York Health & Racquet Club, the JCC, the Harlem Y, Z Club, Manhattan Plaza Health Club and several other venues.
